Neal Carter

Neal Carter started his racing career riding motorcycles shortly after World War II at Fort Miami Speedway in Toledo. He was living in Wapakoneta, Ohio at the time. His first race in a midget race car was later in 1945 at Partington's Pastures north of Detroit.

His first midget race car cost him $400. He had bought it from Fiber Walter. It must have been quite a sight as he pulled it to the tracks with his motorcycle.

He lived in Detroit from 1948 until 1953 and during that time he won the Motor City Speedway midget championship three years in a row, taking the titles in 1949, 1950, and 1951. He also claimed the AAA Ohio/Michigan midget championship in 1949. That year he raced AAA midgets, sprints and championship cars.

He passed the rookie test at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 1951, but unfortunately he didn't have a time fast enough to qualify for the Indy 500 race.

He accumulated at least 200 wins including a big win at Milwaukee. Neal also ran well in a 100 mile race at Langhorne. Every time Neal raced at Bigelow Field in Grand Rapids he won. Other tracks he ran well at included Adrian, the Grand Rapids Speedrome, Owosso, and Jackson.

Neal didn't race at all in 1954 and he hung up his helmet for good in 1955. Neal had a relatively short but illustrious career.
